Ford Focus MK2.5 Dash/Instrument Cluster Repair

21st February 2021

Another increasingly common issue i have had the pleasure to repair recently. A client asked me if I could have a look at the instrument cluster on their car. The fault was causing the dials to go to zero, all the warning lights to illuminate and the car going in to limp mode. A light tap on the top of the dash board would fix it temporarily. This was happening whilst driving so not only was it a nuisance, it was dangerous.

They already removed the instrument cluster from the car and dropped it off with me. After hearing about the issue, it was clear it was a bad connection somewhere.

After looking at the PCB under the microscope, I could instantly see broken solder joints on the back of the main connector. These broken joints were tiny and nearly impossible to spot with the naked eye.

Checking over the rest of the board revealed nothing else out of the ordinary so I set to work re-soldering all the joints on the main connector. After handing back to the customer, they fitted it all back themselves, tested it and the issue is permanently fixed.

VW Transporter T5 Windscreen Wiper Repair

19th December 2020

An increasingly common issue i have had the pleasure to repair recently. A client asked me to replace a wiper relay inside of a control unit for their van. The fault was causing the wipers to work intermittently or stop working altogether. They had identified the fault themselves and asked me to replace the relay. After sharing this repair on my Facebook page, another client had got in contact about the same issue on their van.

They had already spent hundreds of pounds in the space of four months trying to repair the wiper problem but to no avail. This was until they spotted the post on my Facebook page.

After explaining the issue they were having to me, i quickly identified that the most likely cause for this problem was the wiper relay.

After replacing this relay, they had the control unit fitted back in to the van and the problem was solved. They were extremely grateful as i managed to turn this around in less than 24hours and had saved their families santa visit, not to mention saving a lot more headaches and money

Right To Repair

18th December 2020

One of the biggest fights in this industry at the moment is the right to repair. Manufactures are serializing parts inside their devices and making parts to buy harder. This means it is making it more difficult for third party repairers to repair.
